The Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) hosted a diplomatic reception on 13 June (Friday) to mark the 127th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and commemorate 50 years of Philippine presence in Taiwan.
The event welcomed over 100 guests, including Taiwanese officials, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, and representatives from the Filipino community.
MECO Chairperson and Resident Representative Atty. Cheloy Velicaria-Garafil, MNSA led the evening’s celebration, and, in her speech, emphasized the strength and unity of Filipinos both at home and abroad. She also highlighted the longstanding friendship between the Philippines and Taiwan, grounded in shared values and mutual aspirations. Chairperson Garafil also reaffirmed MECO’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Filipinos in Taiwan and to strengthening bilateral cooperation under the Bagong Pilipinas framework.
The reception underscored the theme, “Fifty Years of Filipino Resilience in Taiwan,” in honor of the over 150,000 Filipinos living and working across Taiwan’s various industries in manufacturing, caregiving, education, and healthcare.
Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lin Chia-lung, conveyed Taiwan’s appreciation for the close partnership with the Philippines and highlighted the growing economic and people-to-people exchanges. He announced a one-year extension of Taiwan’s visa-free policy for Philippine nationals and expressed support for deeper bilateral cooperation in trade, connectivity, and regional peace.
The evening featured captivating cultural performances by violinist Mr. Jay Cayuca, acclaimed vocalist Ms. Bayang Barrios, the West Visayas State University dancers, and beatboxing group Go Beatbox, showcasing the richness and diversity of Filipino talent.
Reflecting on the enduring friendship and shared aspirations between the Philippines and Taiwan, MECO Chairperson Garafil expressed optimism for the future, emphasizing the resilience and hope of the Filipino community in Taiwan, saying, “Let us keep going. The future is bright.”
