Philippine Professionals in Taiwan Unite for a Stronger Community

In a landmark event held at the Great Skyview Hotel on October 27, 2024, over a hundred Filipino professionals gathered to establish the Philippine Professionals Organization (PPO) in Taiwan. This gathering, organized by the MECO Migrant Workers Office (MWO) and OWWA Taipei, brought together Filipino professionals from diverse fields—education, engineering, medicine, and management—each united by a shared goal to foster a stronger, more connected Filipino community in Taiwan.

Atty. Cesar L. Chavez Jr., Labor Attaché and Director of Migrant Workers Services of MWO Taipei, welcomed the attendees with heartfelt encouragement. He emphasized the significance of building networks among Filipino professionals, noting, “The strength of our community lies in our unity and shared commitment to support each other. This organization will be a cornerstone for advancing our skills, improving our lives, and building lifelong friendships here in Taiwan.” His words set an inspiring tone, motivating the participants to take an active role in shaping a unified and vibrant Filipino professionals’ community. The event was also honored by MECO Chairperson and Resident Representative Atty. Cheloy E. Velicaria-Garafil, who shared a special message on the importance of unity among OFWs, further emphasizing the support from MECO leadership. The presence of Deputy Resident Representative Alice Visperas, OWWA Welfare Officer Ruth Roselynn C. Vibar and dedicated MECO  MWO and OWWA staff made the occasion memorable for all.

Filipino professionals divided into three main groups—educators, engineers, and other professionals such as doctors and accountants. Each group discussed plans for skill upgrades, certification renewals, and even cultural and recreational activities. Interim officers were elected in two groups, while the engineers organized by geographic region to support closer local connections.

The educators, now known as the United Filipino Educators Alliance in Taiwan (UFEAT), aim to hold regular seminars, cultural trips, and mental health support activities. Meanwhile, the engineers, forming the Filipino Engineers Association in Taiwan (FEAT), plan to support underboard engineers preparing for licensure exams and explore continuing education programs in Taiwan. The Society of Integrated Filipino Professionals in Taiwan (SIFPT) includes other professions and has mapped out plans for PRC renewals and various trainings to enhance their members' skillsets. During the plenary, each group presented their goals and upcoming activities, fostering an atmosphere of collaboration and excitement for future projects. This meeting also set the foundation for PPO’s long-term goals, uniting various professions under one umbrella organization in Taiwan.

With plans for future gatherings and online community groups, the Philippine Professionals Organization is off to a promising start. The PPO aims to be more than just a network—it’s a family for OFWs in Taiwan, bound by professional pride and a shared heritage.
