MECO Meets With DOTR To Discuss Railway Collaboration

Posted: 1/31/2025 4:12 PM

Department of Transportation (DoTr) Secretary Jimmy Bautista and Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Chairperson Cheloy Garafil meet to discuss railway collaboration as a potential segment to complement the proposed MOU on Economic Corridor Enhancement with Taiwan. Sec. Bautista welcomed the proposal and assigned a team in DOTR to review the document for technical feasibility and alignment with the national railway development plan. The proposed collaboration will serve as an important infrastructure in the context of trade and investments to carry out faster mobility of people and delivery of goods primarily in the selected area where the trains may be developed.

Chairperson Garafil further shared the expression of interest from a private company to design an electric vehicle (EV) inspired by the iconic Philippines' jeepney. With this, Sec Bautista also assigned a team from DOTr to coordinate with the company and discuss further the Philippines' standards and specification models. The said opportunity creates a solution that improves the environment and also preserves a beloved aspect of Filipino culture. The electric Jeepney could very well be the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Filipino transportation, paving the way for more green, efficient, and culturally-conscious vehicles.
